Former Coronation Street star Sue Johnston has joined the cast of Downton Abbey, with a part specially written for her.
70-year-old actress Sue Johnston will play Denker, Lady’s Maid to Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham in the fifth season of the acclaimed period drama.
Speaking about her casting Johnston said: “I’m delighted and very excited to be a part of Downton Abbey. I have some lovely friends in it that I’ll be so happy to be working with and I cannot wait to start filming.”
Johnston joins Richard E. Grant, who is set to play Simon Bricker, who visits Downton Abbey as a guest of the Granthams.
Anna Chancellor will also appear in a guest role, playing Lady Anstruther, while Rade Sherbedgia will play a Russian refugee who has fled the Russian revolution. Dame Harriet Walter will reprise her role as Lady Shackleton.
The new series will also feature returning cast members including Maggie Smith, as the Dowager Countess, and Hugh Bonneville.
Speaking about the new series executive producer Gareth Neame said: “We are delighted to welcome these talented actors to the world of Downton. The characters they play are set to bring yet more excitement and intrigue to the show.”
Filming for the new series is set to get under way this summer.
