It has been confirmed that Paul McCartney has been hospitalised with a viral infection.

Representatives for the musician confirmed the news following reports in the Japanese press that he was getting medical treatment.

The spokesperson said "Since contracting a virus that led to the postponement of tour dates, Paul received successful medical treatment at a hospital in Tokyo.

"He will make a complete recovery and has been ordered to take a few days' rest. Paul has been extremely moved by all the messages."

The musician has initially cancelled two gigs but then went out to cancel the entire Japanese tour saying in a statement earlier this week "Thank you so much for your kind messages of support. I'm so very touched. Unfortunately my condition has not improved overnight.

"I was really hoping that I'd be feeling better [on May 20]. I'm so disappointed and sorry to be letting my fans down."
