Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has announced that his engagement to Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki has ended, just days after they sent out the wedding invitations.
The 25-year-old from Holywood, Co. Down made the announcement today through his communications consultancy.
In a statement, McIlroy said: “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.
“The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.
“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
Wozniacki, a former world number one tennis player, had been caddying for McIlroy in Augusta at April’s Masters tournament. But the pair recently denied reports that they were set to tie the knot this August.
Wozniacki, who agreed to marry the Northern Irishman earlier this year had said they "were working on it" when quizzed on April 10 last about a date for their wedding.
