Tonight’s Eurovision Song Contest was won by Austria’s Conchita Wurst with Rise Like a Phoenix with a score of 290 points.

Austria won after a very close race with the Netherlands who came in second. The Common Linnets performed Calm After the Storm.

It was revealed after the contest that the Netherlands had won the first semi-final on Tuesday night while Austria had won out in the second semi-final on Thursday.

Wurst had attracted a huge amount of publicity prior to the contest and has been dubbed “the bearded lady” in the press. Dismissing the attention she told Associated Press "Hey, I'm just a singer in a fabulous dress, with great hair and a beard.'

Tom Neuwirth unleashed his alter-ego Conchita on the world in 2011 when she competed in the talent show Die Große Chance and took second place, becoming a national icon in Austria.

Conchita tried and failed to represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 with the song That’s What I Am.
