Robert Downey Jr has reportedly attempted to lure the retired Jack Nicholson back into acting for his third Sherlock Holmes film.

77-year old Nicholson has been retired since 2010 when he starred with Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd in the James L. Brooks comedy, How Do You Know? He has apparently been spending a lot of his time on the golf course.

It has also been rumoured that Downey Jr tried getting Jack to star as his character's father in the forthcoming film The Judge. However, Robert Duvall was ultimately selected for the role. The movie also stars Vera Farmiga and Billy Bob Thornton.

In the David Dobkin-directed The Judge (which opens in Ireland in October) a successful lawyer (played by Downey Jr) returns to his hometown for his mother's funeral. On arrival he discovers that his estranged father, the town's judge, is suspected of murder.
