Classic British wartime comedy Dad's Army will return to the big screen with a new movie starring Bill Nighy as Sergeant Wilson and Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring.

Dad's Army was screened from 1968 to 1977 on BBC TV and followed the mostly inept exploits of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard during the Second World War.

At its peak, it attracted nearly 20 million viewers, with nearly two million still tuning in for the Sunday night repeats in recent years. The series was made into a movie for the first time in 1971.

The Sunday Times reports that Toby Jones, whose roles include Truman Capote in Infamous, replaces Arthur Lowe as the pompous Captain Mainwaring whilst Nighy, star of Love Actually, will play gentlemanly Sergeant Wilson, a part originally acted by John Le Mesurier.

The much-loved show spawned a series of catchphrases including "Don't panic", the call by Corporal Jones every time things started to fall apart, and Captain Mainwaring’s put down “you stupid boy”.
