The long-running Friday the 13th series of films is being adapted into a television show.

An hour-long drama series will link to the horror franchise by having notorious serial killer Jason Voorhees returning to Crystal Lake to victimise the town's current residents.

Since the 1980 original a series of 12 films have explored Voorhees's relationship with Crystal Lake and his own twisted family dynamic. The new episodic TV series will also explore the killer in multiple time periods.

Sean S Cunningham - who directed the original movie - will serve as executive producer on the television show and he told Deadline:

“Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide.”

His producing partner Robert Barsamian added: “Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we're confident will not only excite existing fans of Friday The 13th, but also attract new audiences to the situations and characters that inhabit the small town of Crystal Lake.”
