HBO has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming sci-fi series The Leftovers.

The show is based on a 2011 novel of the same name by American writer Tom Perrotta, who also wrote Election and Little Children, novels that were both adapted into critically-acclaimed films.

The television adaptation of The Leftovers was created by Perrotta and Damon Lindelof, who was the co-creator and showrunner of the hugely successful Lost.

The pilot was written by Tom and Damon and features an impressive cast that includes Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Liv Tyler, Christopher Eccleston and Ann Dowd.

The series will follow the suburb of Mapleton that tries to cope with the disappearance of more than 100 residents with Theroux playing the local chief of police, Kevin Garvey.

The Leftovers has been scheduled to premiere in June as a replacement for HBO's popular medieval fantasy Game of Thrones.
