David Duchovny will star in an upcoming NBC television drama about Charles Manson.

The X-Files star will play a Los Angeles detective investigating the Manson cult during the late 1960s, EW reports.

The 13-episode show is called Aquarius and has been billed as an "event series."

Duchovny commented: "I'm thrilled to be working with [NBC Entertainment chairman] Bob Greenblattagain and coming back to broadcast television. I think Aquarius has a chance to be a special show, and I can't wait to get going."

NBC said in a statement: "The twists and turns of a complicated undercover operation will lead Duchovny's character and his young partner to the brink of Manson's crimes that will eventually lead to the Tate-LaBianca murders in subsequent seasons."

Duchovny will also executive produce the series alongside Melanie Greene, Marty Adelstein and the show's creator John McNamara.

The actor's Showtime series Californiacation begins its seventh and final season this April.
