Actor Steven Seagal says that Russian President Valdimir Putin is his personal friend and has called him "one of the greatest world leaders."

The 61-year-old star of Urban Justice and Attack Force also believes Putin's actions in Crimea to be "very reasonable."

He revealed his admiration for the former KGB lieutenant colonel to the state-run newspaper Rossiskaya Gazeta. The Moscow Times reports that Seagal describes western policy on Ukraine as "idiotic."

He believes that Putin's desire "to protect the Russian-speaking people of Crimea, his assets, and the Russian Black Sea military base in Sevastopol … [was] very reasonable".

Seagal, currently filming an action movie in Romania, also appeared on the state-owned TV station Russia Today to discuss the situation in Ukraine, insisting that media coverage of US opposition to Putin's actions has been designed to promote an Obama agenda.

Moreover, He has been tipped for a future political career in the US by Rossiskaya Gazeta, which describes him as comparable in  stature to to two Hollywood icons who also became politicos - Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
