Sofia Coppola is to direct a new Little Mermaid adaptation - but this one isn't going to be anything like the Disney version.
According to Deadline, the Lost in Translation director is in negotiations to lead a live-action update of the classic children's tale which will be far more faithful to Hans Christian Andersen's dark 1837 fairy tale than previous adaptations.
Coppola is stepping in for Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement), who was previously expected to take the director's chair.
Maintaining a Disney link, Wright is reported to be set to direct an update of JM Barrie's classic, Peter Pan.
There's no release date or casting news, but Deadline says that production of The Little Mermaid is expected to "move quickly".
