The Big Bang Theory has been renewed for another three seasons and will continue until at least 2017.

Chuck Lorre's comedy is currently the highest-rated programme on US TV, averaging 19.8 million viewers, with a big 6.1 rating with 18 to 49 year olds in its current seventh season.

CBS has announced that the sitcom - which runs on RTÉ Two and E4 - will continue until at least the 2016-17 schedule.

Warner Bros TV is currently undertaking contract renewals with its main cast - Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik.

"Comedy is a big part of our schedule, and The Big Bang Theory is the biggest comedy force on television," said CBS Entertainment head Nina Tassler.

CBS is also expected to renew three other Chuck Lorre sitcoms: Two and a Half Men, Mike and Molly and Mom.
