The popular BBC Sunday night drama, Call the Midwife, lost a major character last night during its third season finale.

Jessica Raine, who plays the lead character of Jenny Lee, has left the series. Her character has left Nonnatus House in order to work in a Marie Curie cancer hospital and start a new life with new beau, Phillip.

The voice of mature Jenny (Vanessa Redgrave) will continue to narrate upcoming series of the show as Jenny Lee keeps in contact with the staff at Nonnatus House.

The actress is leaving to pursue other projects. She was recently seen in BBC Two’s Line of Duty and also starred in the Doctor Who film, An Adventure in Space and Time in which she played BBC producer Verity Lambert.

Call the Midwife will return for a Christmas special later this year and a new series begins in 2015.
