Scott Kalvert, best known for directing The Basketball Diaries, has died, aged 49.

Blue Bloods Donnie Wahlberg, who worked with the director, paid tribute to him and wrote on his Twitter page: "#RIP to a dear friend; Scott Kalvert. The role you played in mine, and my brother Marks career success, can't be measured. You'll be missed."

The director was found at his Californian home on Wednesday (March 5) and his death is currently being investigated.

After working with Donnie's brother, Mark and his former band Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch and directing their video Good Vibrations, he then cast Wahlberg in The Basketball Diaries alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film was based on the life and diaries of American Basketball player Jim Carroll, focusing on the decline of his promising career and his addition to heroin.

The director also helmed 2002's Deuces Wild featuring Stephen Dorff and he subsequently worked as an executive producer for the 2009 Nickelodeon film School Gyrls, starring Justin Bieber.

Kalvert worked with a number of other established musicians, creating memorable music videos such as DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith's Parents Just Don't Understand, LL Cool J's I'm That Type of Guy, Salt 'N Pepa's Shoop and Cyndi Lauper's I Drove All Night.
