It has been announced that Grey’s Anatomy is bringing back Isaiah Washington to the show after he was dramatically let go seven years ago following on-set clashes.

The Hollywood Reporter says Washington will guest star on the show for an episode where he will reprise his role as Dr Preston Burke.

His return is tied in to the departure from the long-running hospital drama of one of its most popular characters, Sandra Oh whose character, Christina, was engaged to Washington’s character.

Oh is set to depart at the end of the current tenth season.

Showrunner Shonda Rhimes said of the move "It's important to me that Cristina's journey unfolds exactly as it should. Burke is vital to that journey - he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang."

Last year Washington became a cast regular on The CW’s The 100 marking his first regular cast role since he left Grey’s. Washington made controversial remarks against former Grey’s star T.R. Knight for which he later apologized.
