The Wire creator David Simon has joined the production of the new HBO-commissioned miniseries about Martin Luther King.

Deadline reports that Simon will write the first episode, and see the show through to completion with his Treme co-creator Eric Overmyer.

The HBO six-hour miniseries is to be based on the book trilogy America: In the King Years by Taylor Branch.

It will cover the freedom rides, the Birmingham and Selma campaigns and King's relationships with John F and Robert Kennedy, and Lyndon B Johnson.

The drama will also feature the civil rights march in Washington that King was organising when he was murdered.

Oprah Winfrey has signed up as producer, despite being also involved in another King-based project, a feature film entitled Selma, which covers Martin Luther King‘s 1965 voting rights campaign.
