The artist Barrie Cooke has died. He was 83.

Born in Cheshire in the UK in 1931, he moved to Ireland in 1954 and held his first solo exhibition in Ireland the following year.

Though based in Ireland ever since, he was widely travelled and his richly expressionist, semi-abstract paintings were strongly influenced by time spent in places including Lapland, New Zealand and Malaya.

He also collaborated with a number of prominent poets, including Seamus Heaney and the British Poet Laureate Ted Hughes.
