US Network ABC say that 43 million viewers watched this year's Academy Awards - the biggest American TV audience since the 2004 finale of sitcom Friends.

Gravity and 12 Years a Slave were the big winners at the ceremony in LA and ABC are reporting a three million rise on last year's viewing figures, making it the biggest audience for the show since the 43.5 million people who watched the Oscars in 2004.

This year's Oscars was also the highest-rating US entertainment programme since NBC's Friends' bittersweet ending was watched by 52.5 million people, also in 2004.
