Actor John Goodman has said that seeing himself on screen portraying Santa Clause in a recent movie inspired him to lose 70lbs but he still wishes he could lose more weight.

The 61-year-old actor who has won acclaim for roles in The Big Lebowski, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? is currently starring with George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Cate Blanchett in The Momuments Men, a wartime caper which sees a squad of soldiers and art lovers on a mission to Europe to save artworks from the Nazis.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Goodman said, “I was in pretty good shape when I got this role but I thought I was doing better than I looked on screen. I thought I looked terrible.

“I wish I wasn’t as fat as I am. It just bothers me. When I saw a film in which I played Santa Claus recently, I walked away thinking, ‘This is just God-awful. I look terrible. I want to have my mouth sewn shut.’ And it got me to lose about 70lb. Then I started to edge back up again.”
