Sheridan Smith is to star in a new television drama about the life and career of singer turned tv host Cilla Black.
The three-part series will be made by ITV and penned by BAFTA winner Jeff Pope. It follows Cilla from her beginnings as cloak room attendent Pricilla White in The Cavern club in Liverpool, to her friendship with The Beatles, and her success on shows such as Blind Date and Surprise, Surprise.
According to ITV, "Cilla tells of her rocky rise to fame and will capture the essence of 1960s Liverpool, the atmosphere of promise and excitement as the Merseybeat music scene was on the verge of exploding in a blaze of tight-fitting skirts, stiletto heels, and beehives."
32-year-old Smith, who has appeared in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and Gavin and Stacey, said: “I am thrilled to be playing Cilla, as she is a British icon. In the 60s, as a young girl from Liverpool, she had numerous number ones and sang with The Beatles, her life story is fascinating,”
Filming of Cilla begins in Liverpool in March and will take in some of the city’s most famous landmarks including the world famous Cavern Club.
