It’s been confirmed that the Monday to Thursday 1 to 4am slot on RTÉ 2fm will be taken by Dan Hegarty's The Alternative.

The show is essentially a musical free-for-all, mixing the likes of Gil Scott-Heron with Nanu Nanu, Cadence Weapon and Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley with Sunken Foa. The show also broadcasts 2fm’s studio sessions, as well as weekly live music from across Europe.

The Alternative also goes out on 2fm's sister digital/online station 2XM daily from 10am.

Dan Hegarty joined 2fm in 2003 and his The Alternative To Sleep, which was launched a year later, has been a constant champion for Irish and alternative music. Session guests have included bands such as God Is an Astronaut, The Vincent(s) and Little Green Cars.

Hegarty will also bring listeners live music from across Ireland and Europe each week with bands and places such as Foals from Longitude, Pixies live from Geneva, and Jurassic 5 from the Sonar Festival.

Hegarty said: “If anyone is left standing after Chris and Ciara, I’m gonna pummel their ears with three hours of great music. I'm thrilled to be part of the new schedule as 2fm evolves.”
