Despite the fact that former Bond star Pierce Brosnan has said he currently lives "a simple, almost bourgeois life", he has said his faith gets him through the tough times in his life.

Speaking to German magazine, Bild, the 60-year-old Navan man described his days with wife Keely Shaye Smith: "We have a wonderful cottage by the sea.

"My day goes like this: I make coffee and watch the waves. Then I draw a little and go surfing. Meet some film people, cycle, go home. 'What's for dinner?' It's a simple, almost bourgeois life."

However when Brosnan's first wife, Cassandra Harris passed away after ovarian cancer in 1991 and her daughter, Charlotte, whom Brosnan adopted, died last year from the same illness, he said that his faith helped him through.

"My faith has always helped me. I'm Catholic.

"That's all you have left when your heart is just a dark hole at four in the morning and you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. No one can escape life's pain. That's life."

Speaking about his simple life, Brosnan added: "Fame comes and goes, it's a double-edged sword.

"As a young actor I desperately wanted to be famous and appear in films - which I achieved. But you can't hold on to fame, you always have to ask yourself: 'How would I cope without it?' And I would cope!"
