Modern Family's Phil is "a talking dog", says star

Burrell - "Here I am playing a talking dog, only he's like twice as smart as me and Phil put together!"

Currently on screens playing canine genius Mr Peabody in animated movie Mr Peabody & Sherman, Modern Family star Ty Burrell has said that his character in the TV show, clueless dad Phil Dunphy, actually has something in common with the brainy beagle.

Burrell told RTÉ TEN: "It's funny, because up until I did this movie my best reference for playing Phil Dunphy was that I was playing a talking dog!"

He continued: "I always thought that Phil Dunphy was essentially a talking dog. Just a very well-meaning, people-pleasing, tail-wagging guy who just happened to knock a lot of stuff over in his enthusiasm! [Now] Here I am playing a talking dog, only he's like twice as smart as me and Phil put together!"

Asked how Phil Dunphy would pitch a Modern Family outing to see Mr Peabody & Sherman, Burrell replied: "I don't think he would need to pitch. He would just disappear and go off on his own, just for the food - just for the movie theatre food!"
