House of Cards has been renewed for a third season by Netflix.

The award-winning US political drama, which is yet to air its second season, has been greenlit by the streaming site for further episodes, the show's producer confirmed on Tuesday (February 4).

The second season, starring Kevin Spacey as ruthless politician Francis Underwood and Robin Wright, as his equally ambitious wife, will premiere on Netflix on February 14.

All 13 episodes will be at available at once on the subscription video streaming service.

Production on season three is set to begin shortly.

Season one of House of Cards, which marked Netflix's entry into producing original programming, debuted a year ago.

The show won three Emmys last year, including one for Oscar-nominated David Fincher (The Social Network, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) for outstanding director for a drama series.

The show recently won the Best New Series award over fellow Netflix original Orange is the New Black at the Writers Guild Awards.
