Irish band Kodaline has not only won the EBBA award for an Irish act at this year’s Eurosonic Music Festival but have also picked up the Public Choice Award.

Speaking to 2fm’s Dan Hegarty back stage at the European Border Breakers Awards in Groningen, Netherlands, which was hosted by Jools Holland, they said: "Last year when we played at Eurosonic we were a new band.

“It was so exciting to play four or five gigs in one day. To be back here this year and receive an award is cool, it's also cold!"

The award was given to the Dublin band members, Steve Garrigan, Vincent May, Mark Prendergrast and Jason Boland, for their success outside of Ireland: "We always said that we wanted to break out of Ireland and tour as much as we can.

“After this we'll be in Switzerland and then a show in Germany, then we're off to America in February. We're bigger in Ireland than we are anywhere else, but Holland was where it kicked off for us first."

The Eurosonic festival officially started in Groningen last night, and Girl Band, Hozier, Kodaline, Daithi, Kid Karate, and The Strypes are on the bill at various locations around the city.

You can listen back to The Strypes' set on 2fm from 10pm on the RTÉ Radio Player, and an interview with The Alternative presenter Hegarty just beforehand.

Listen to Dan Hegarty on 2fm's The Alternative Monday to Thursday from 10pm to 1am on 2fm and from 10am to 1pm on 2xm. For more information visit his web page click here.
