Sherlock star Martin Freeman has said he is unsure when the popular BBC series will return for a fourth series.

The show finished it third three episode series last Sunday night with a cliff-hanger which hinted at the possible return of Andrew Scott’s Moriarty who shot himself in the head at the end of series two.

Show co-creator Steven Moffat said he is keen for Sherlock to return as soon as possible.

Asked about this by Access Hollywood, Freeman said "That's news to me. People have told me that today. If journalists are saying it, it must be true. I don't know."

He also said "I've not read any new scripts. So all I know is we all like the show, we all want to keep doing it for as long as we want to do it and as long as we enjoy it."
