Fassbender, U2 are Oscar nominees

The nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced, with 12 Years a Slave star Michael Fassbender and U2 among the nominees.

Joining Fassbender in the Best Supporting Actor category are: Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

U2 are nominated for Best Original Song for Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

American Hustle and Gravity lead the nominations with 10 each.

Philomena, which tells the story of an Irish woman searching for her long lost son, received four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Judi Dench.

Christian Bale (American Hustle), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) are nominated for Best Actor.

Amy Adams (American Hustle), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena) and Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) are the nominees for Best Actress.

Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and June Squibb (Nebraska) are the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.

The Best Director nominees are: Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), David O Russell (American Hustle) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street).

American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street are nominated for Best Picture.

The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Earnest & Celestine, Frozen and The Wind Rises are nominated for Best Animated Feature.

The nominees for Best Documentary Feature are: The Act of Killing, Cutie and the Boxer, Dirty Wars, The Square and 20 Feet from Stardom.

The Broken Circle Breakdown, The Great Beauty, The Hunt, The Missing Picture and Omar will compete for Best Foreign Language Film.

The winners will be announced on Sunday March 2.

The nominations were announced by Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs
