Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he is "so proud" of his parents after they appeared in the first episode of the new series.
Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, who are both professional actors, played Sherlock Holmes’ mother and father in a scene in Baker Street.
The actor admitted that it was "nerve-wracking" appearing opposite his parents on the show, explaining: “They’re Equity card carrying members but you know it was nerve-wracking because they are actors as well and yet they were brilliant and they were fantastic.
“We did the Baker Street scenes quite early so I think everyone was still getting back into it.”
Over 9 million viewers tuned in to BBC One on New Year's Day to see the first episode of the season, after the last series saw Cumberbatch seemingly plunge to his death from a London rooftop.
It ended with Cumberbatch's character lying dead on the pavement, before resurfacing and watching over his own grave.
The new episode showed fans several different versions of how the detective faked the fall.
