Leonardo DiCaprio has defended his new film The Wolf of Wall Street directed by Martin Scorsese.

The film takes a look at American greed but has attracted some criticism for appearing to celebrate the lifestyle of convicted stock market manipulator Jordan Belfort whom DiCaprio plays in the film.

The actor has said that the film is in no way condoning this behaviour. In an interview with Variety he said “I hope people understand we’re not condoning this behavior, that we’re indicting it. The book was a cautionary tale, and if you sit through the film, you’ll realize what we’re saying about these people and this world, because it’s an intoxicating one.”

He praised director Martin Scorsese for making films which are “vital and talked about, and have an element of controversy about them.”

The Wolf of Wall Street will be released here in January.
