Adele was conferred with an MBE by Prince Charles in Buckingham Palace today.

The singer was honoured with a Member of the British Empire insignia. The Londoner, whose second album, 21, is the biggest-selling album of the 21st century, joins a long line of pop stars and musicians who have been recognised by the British royals including Bono, Jim Corr, Eric Clapton, and Van Morrison.

David Bowie, Paul Weller and Keith Richards have all declined awards over the years and in 1969, John Lennon famously handed his MBE back with a note reading: "I am returning this MBE in protest against Britain's involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam, and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts."

Adele looked elegant in a deep blue patterned Stella McCartney dress.
