Actor Paul Walker dies in car accident

Actor Paul Walker has died following a car accident, it has been confirmed.

The Fast and the Furious star passed away aged 40 following the accident in Santa Clarita, Los Angeles.

Walker was the passenger in a Porsche when the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a telegraph pole or tree.

Deputies at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the car was engulfed in flames when they arrived, and both Walker and the driver were pronounced dead at the scene.

They were travelling back from a fundraiser for Walker's charity organisation Reach Out Worldwide when the accident occurred.

A message on Walker's Twitter page confirmed the news, saying:

A statement on the actor's Facebook page read: "He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news.

"Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences."

A statement from Universal Pictures said: "All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the Fast and Furious films, and to countless fans.

"We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul's family."

Walker is best known for his roles in the Fast & the Furious franchise, having appeared in five of the six films about illegal street racing and heists. He was as working on Fast & Furious 7 at the time of his death. 

He is survived by his 15-year-old daughter Meadow.
