Robbie Williams has admitted he had a hair transplant in Los Angeles because he was ''bored'' and not because he was going bald.

Speaking on the Graham Norton Show last night, the 39-year-old singer, said: ''I've lived in LA for a long time and they say, 'If you sit in a barber's shop for long enough, you'll get a hair cut'.

''Well, if you live in Los Angeles for long enough you're going to get some surgery.

''I've had a thatch done, I'll tell everyone now. I didn't even need it. That's the weirdest thing.

''I had like three months off and got bored so thought, I'll go in.''

Williams, who has just released his new album, Swings Both Ways, added: ''I just got some at the sides and front done. That's what I'm saying about Los Angeles, it's weird.''

The former Take That star, who is married to actress Ayda Field, also spoke of his homesickness after the birth of their one-year-old daughter, Teddy.

"Teddy was born 13 months ago and all of a sudden I got homesick. I want her to have British sensibilities and for her to understand irony.''

However, Robbie still enjoys life on the road: ''I spent three years away not doing anything and it took me two years to get back to a place where I felt confident enough to do my job and I got all this acceptance and love and now I am addicted to touring, to the shows.''
