Helen Mirren wins Best Actress at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards

Helen Mirren took home the Best Actress award at last night's London Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

The renowned actress was honoured for her performance in Peter Morgan's The Audience, triumphing over fellow nominees Billie Piper (The Effect), Linda Bassett (Roots), Lesley Manville (Ghosts) and Kristin Scott Thomas (Old Times).

The Best Actor gong was jointly awarded to Rory Kinnear and Adrian Lester for their roles in Othello.

David Walliams won a special Award for Comedy for his role as Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Top Hollywood star Kevin Spacey took home the Editor's Award for his contribution to British theatre.

The 59th annual London Evening Standard Theatre Awards took place at the Savoy Hotel, with Homeland's Damian Lewis presenting.
