The BBC has released the first clip from the much-anticipated Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special.

Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman star in the brief excerpt from the episode entitled The Day of the Doctor, which has been written by Steven Moffat.

The 14-second clip features a mention of legendary British Queen Elizabeth I - played by Gavin & Stacey's Joanna Page in the episode - and sees the Doctor (Smith) and Clara (Coleman) examine what's described as an "impossible" painting.

Smith first hinted back in March that paintings would be key to the plot of the landmark episode, which also stars former Doctor David Tennant, Billie Piper and John Hurt.

The Day of the Doctor will air at 7.50pm on Saturday, November 23 on BBC One.

The 75-minute episode - which features classic Who monsters the Daleks and the Zygons - will also be simulcast globally and screened in cinemas worldwide.
