Michael Fassbender has said it would be “the icing on the cake” if he received an Oscar nomination next year.

The Kerry actor is tipped to be recognised for his roles in The Counsellor and 12 Years a Slave.

In the Steve McQueen-directed 12 Years a Slave he plays a brutal slave owner while in The Counsellor he plays a lawyer who gets dragged into organised crime.

Speaking to Sky News he said "I don't have a litmus test for the darkest role, I just like the script and story. I don't know why this is happening. It might be time to do a comedy."
