Fox has ordered a TV series based on Batman's Commissioner Gordon.

Gotham will focus on the detective's origin story before he meets the caped crusader.

Deadline reports that, although the popular DC Comics superhero won't feature in the show, the notorious villains from Gotham City are set to appear.

The Mentalist showrunner Bruno Heller will executive produce and write one-hour episodes with Warner Bros Television for the show.

Commissioner James Gordon was introduced in the very first Batman comic Detective Comics #27 in May 1939.

Gary Oldman portrayed the character in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy between 2005 and 2012.
