Alexa Chung: all you ever wanted to know about the It Girl and much-imitated style icon

Aside from style tips from the fashion icon and 'It' girl that is Alexa Chung, the 29-year old first-time author gets into the murky area of heartbreak in her new book, which is simply called It.

"I'm not heartbroken any more, but I definitely was when I wrote it," she tells today's Guardian newspaper. For the record, she wrote the Penguin-published book of personal musings on eyeliner and lipstick and the whole damn thing sometime last year.

"There was one big thing, and then there were various ill-advised flings I had, to get over him, so yeah," she replies, refering to her relationship with Alex Turner, Arctic Monkeys' lead singer. Turner was her boyfriend for four years until they broke up in 2011.

"But I don't want to imply he broke my heart. I was grieving for the loss of something. I know how the media does that whole 'poor her' thing, like they did with Jennifer Aniston – not that I'm comparing myself to her, of course. . ."

Chung tells The Guardian that she is grateful for the experience of having that bad time, and for being on her own (she is single at present.) "I'd never really been on my own before – I'd always gone from one relationship to the next – so I had to learn all this stupid stuff. "

She had to learn how to work her TV set, for instance "And now there isn't a dude to tell me how to put up the blinds. But it's good to learn how to work your way round a drill." Chung and Turner are nevertheless still friends, she says, and the musician is, in fact, her "best friend."
