Michael Fassbender is in final talks to star in Slow West, an upcoming western, it has been reported.

The Prometheus star is set to take the lead role alongside teenage actor Kodi Smit-McPhee in the UK/New Zealand feature from the executive producing team behind the Elizabeth Moss drama Top of the Lake.

The New Zealand Herald reports that Scottish musician John Maclean, formerly of The Beta Band, will direct from a script he wrote.

His earlier project Pitch Black Heist, starring Fassbender and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Hunger), won a Bafta award last year for best short film.

Slow West, which has been funded by Film4, DMC Film and The New Zealand Film Commission, will begin shooting later this year in New Zealand.

Fassbender will be seen later this month in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave.
