Bryan Cranston has been cast in the biopic Trumbo, which will be his first project after the acclaimed Breaking Bad wraps.

The actor will star as the blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jay Roach will direct the indie feature film about the hugely successful screenwriter whose career came to a halt in the 1940s when the House Committee on Un-American Activities called on several Hollywood writers and directors to testify about communist activities.

Trumbo refused to give information and became part of the Hollywood 10, a group blacklisted by the studios. However, he went on to win two Academy Awards under pseudonyms.

The script, which has been written by John McNamara, was adapted from Bruce Cook's 1977 book.

The final two episodes of Breaking Bad will air this month on AMC and will also be released on Netflix.
