Star Trek icon William Shatner has teamed-up with country music star Vince Gill, Foreigner's Mick Jones and guitarist Steve Vai for a new prog-rock album.

The 82-year-old Canadian actor will boldly go again on what will be his seventh solo album in an often ridiculed but much-loved muscial career.

He penned the lyrics for all the songs on the upcoming concept album, Ponder The Mystery, which covers themes such as "ageing, depression, love and beauty", according to a press release.

Shatner describes the album as "quite possibly the most creative thing I have ever done".

His previous albums include his 1968 debut The Transformed Man, 2004's Has Been, which featured a cover of Pulp's Common People, and 2011's Seeking Major Tom.

Ponder The Mystery is scheduled for release on October 8th.
