Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has admitted that the success of the show caught him completely by surprise.

The multi-award-winning drama features former Malcolm in the Middle star Bryan Cranston as Walter White, a meek chemistry teacher who changes his life when he learns he has terminal cancer and turns to drug dealing.

In an interview with RTÉ TEN, the 46-year-old Gilligan expressed his astonishment at Breaking Bad's popularity as the show heads to the climax of its fifth and final season.

"I never thought that our little series would get this far," he said. "I find it a little disorienting that the show has been accepted and appreciated as it is."

Breaking Bad seasons 1-4 are available on Netflix, who are also running the current fifth and final season, adding a new episode each Monday, the day after transmission in the USA.
