Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has left Guillermo del Toro’s latest project Crimson Peak.

The Hollywood Reporter says that no reason was given for his departure but sources say it is not due to another project.

The gothic horror story is set to star Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska. The film is due to start shooting in January.

Cumberbatch is due to appear in the upcoming The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County. He is also the voice of the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Meanwhile three new 90-minutes episodes of Sherlock will return to BBC One shortly where we will see Sherlock's return after his assumed death at the end of season two's The Reichenbach Fall.
