Hartnett - New series will shoot in Ireland until March 2014

Penny Dreadful, the new Josh Hartnett and Eva Green-starring series from Skyfall director Sam Mendes and co-writer John Logan, is to be filmed in Ireland from October.

IFTN, which broke the location news, says the series brings together icons including Dr Frankenstein, his monster and Dorian Gray along with characters from Dracula.

The Showtime series will be produced by Mendes' company Neal Street Productions, which has described the show as "an epic story of alienation, love, loss and what it means to be human".

Mendes will serve as executive producer on the series, which has been created and written by Logan, whose other credits include The Aviator and Gladiator.

IFTN says the series will begin shooting on October 7 at Co Wicklow's Ardmore Studios and locations around Dublin and will continue filming until March 2014.

Showtime President David Nevins said of Penny Dreadful: "John Logan and Sam Mendes are two of the great storytellers of our time. The visual spectacle, combined with the psychological insight in their reimagining of these iconic literary characters, seems totally mesmerising to me. This promises to be a wholly original television show."
