Bad Santa's Billy Bob Thornton will star in the upcoming TV series inspired by the Coen brothers' Fargo.

The 57-year-old star will play Lorne Malvo, a manipulative character who sends a small-town insurance salesman down a path of destruction, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The website says that Thornton's role will be similar to that of Steve Buscemi's in the 1996 Oscar-winning film.

Production on Fargo is expected to begin in the autumn, setting it up for a spring 2014 debut.

Thornton is currently filming Martin Amis's London Fields.
