Gloria, 8.00 am, RTÉ lyric fm
Join presenter Tim Thurston as he celebrates Mary Magdalen with music from the choir known as the Sixteen, and hymns too from the Tallis Scholars, with tenor Mark Padmore. The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir sing Rachmaninov’s glorious Vespers under Paul Hillier, while Malcolm Proud plays Bach on the organ. Presenter Tim is one of the most knowledgable choral experts in these islands and has himself sung in choirs for decades. His programme is a wonderful thing. The set always begins with the early, austere Gregorian chant, as the listener struggles awake and tries not to fall back into slumber. The material increases in richness and diversity as the programmw edges up though the centuries, closer and closer to the contemporary. Then he finishes with something usualy downright unusual, like an extract from a jazz Mass, for instance, as 10.00am creeps in.
