Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan has been cast in Channel 4's historical drama New Worlds.

Also announced to take lead roles in the new four-part series are Game of Thrones star Joe Dempsie, who plays Gendry on the HBO series, Beautiful Creatures actress Alice Englert and The White Queen's Freya Mavor.

New Worlds is set during the Restoration period in the 1680s and follows four young people on both sides of the Atlantic as they "commit their lives to a fairer future with blood, passion and urgency".

The show is a follow-up from the 2008 drama The Devil's Whore and rejoins character Angelica (Eve Best) as she strives to protect her daughter Beth (Mavor) from a country on the brink of chaos.

The series has been written by Peter Flannery and Martine Brant and will be directed by Charles Martin.

Channel 4 Head of Drama Piers Wenger said: "New Worlds is a compelling four-part drama capturing the political struggles of the period following the English Civil War both at home and overseas.

"The combination of Peter and Martine's scripts and Charles Martin's direction has attracted a diverse and glittering cast and we're greatly looking forward to seeing their work brought to the screen."

New Worlds is scheduled to being filming in the UK later this month with an expected 2014 airing date.
