Gary Cooke has become the first contestant to be sent home from Celebrity Masterchef Ireland.

The Après Match star was eliminated from the competition after failing to impress judges Nick Munier and Dylan McGrath in the 'You on a Plate' and Crêpe Suzette cooking challenges.

While Munier described Cooke's salmon and potato dish as "rustic", McGrath was less kind, saying it looked like it "fell from the roof".

Speaking to RTÉ TEN; Cooke said of making Crêpe Suzette, the classic French dessert: "I didn’t have a clue really what it was. There was at much chance as me being able to make it as piloting a plane! I didn’t know what to do."

The comedian admitted that he didn't fancy his chances of getting far in the competition, and downplayed his cooking ability, saying: "I’d say on a scale of 1 to a 100, I’d have be about a 3 or a 4. I can make pasta!"

However, Cooke wasn't too phased by having Nick and Dylan judge his cooking, explaining that it was "kind of hilarious really, because somebody who doesn’t really cook having their food judged by a Michelin starred chef and another 5-star caterer is just intensely ridiculous."

He added of the judges: "They’re both pretty blunt and direct. They’re a good laugh actually, they’re good fun. I enjoyed working with them both. As I say, there was nothing really at stake for me so I didn’t care what they said."

When asked who he pegged to win the competition, Cooke said: "I suppose Aengus [Mac Grianna] seemed to be the best when I was there. Maia [Dunphy] seemed to be good, her visual presentation was fantastic. I thought they both seemed quite good."

Continuing in the Celebrity MasterChef competition are Aengus Mac Grianna, Maia Dunphy, Yvonne Keating, David Gillick, Conor Pope, Kamal Ibrahim and Tracy Piggott.

You can catch episode two of Celebrity MasterChef Ireland on Sunday July 21 at 9.30pm on RTÉ One.
