Carey Mulligan has turned down the opportunity to play Hillary Clinton in a forthcoming biopic.

The Great Gatsby star was being courted to play the former first lady in James Ponsoldt's film, entitled Rodham.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress was offered the role after meeting with director Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, Smashed) last week.

However, sources say that Mulligan was not prepared to commit to the part at this time.

They also revealed that Ponsoldt is working with Rodham's writer Young Il Kim on a director's draft and that they, along with the film's producers Marty Bowen, Richard Arlook and Wyck Godfrey, will resume the search for their leading actress soon.

Rodham will follow the former New York Senator and Secretary of State through her younger years in 1974, when she was a lawyer in Washington.

Also said to be in the running for the role are Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone.

Ponsoldt previously commented on casting the lead role: "We're very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We're in an enviable position.

"Regardless of people's political affiliation or how they feel about Hillary Clinton, you don't find people who question the quality of her intelligence or her drive. I want a wonderful actress who could embody that."
