Beck's career is recalled in Dan's programme tonight

Back and Forth: Beck, The Alternative, 10.00pm, RTÉ 2fm.This week Dan trawls through the music from Beck. Although somewhat reclusive recently, Beck Hansen still creates interest in what ever artistic endeavour that he undertakes.

He has an acoustic album ready for release, and he has also announced a number of live dates.

Most recently, Beck produced Demolished Thoughts, the latest solo album from Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore.

He also sang a very creditable version of John Martyn's Stormbringer on the double CD tribute record Johnny Boy Would Have Loved This. www.beck.com

Calling Everest: Today with Pat Kenny, 10.00am RTÉ Radio
Everest Calling (1994) was originally published as thrilling account of the first Irish ascent of Everest in 1993. On 27 May 1993, Dawson Stelfox made headline news when he became the first Irish person to reach the summit following the route used by Mallory and Irvine in 1924.

A new updated edition of the book is about to be published by Collins Press and the work records illustrious exploits since, including the first Irishwoman to summit on Everest, Clare O’Leary, who along with Pat Falvey climbed the mountain by two different routes.

In 2012 Noel Hanna completed his fifth Everest ascent.

Other notable Irish successes include ascents of Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, K2 and Broad Peak.

Mike Barry became the first Irish person to walk to the South Pole while an Irish crew completed the first east–west circumnavigation of the Arctic in a small yacht.

Members of the first Everest expedition still climb and Irish adventurers continue to attempt to make it to the North Pole.

The author reflects on the perspectives of the original eight climbers and on how a trend towards individual achievement, twinned with commercialisation of sport in western society, has left its own mark on the Himalayas. Dawson Stelfox and Lorna Siggins will both be talking to Pat this morning.

Also on the show today, Dermot O'Neill reports on the Chelsea Flower Show.
