Deals for new Irish movies at Cannes

With Irish director Ruairí Robinson's sci-fi film The Last Days on Mars receiving its world premiere at Cannes today, Monday May 20, deals involving other Irish films have been announced.

Production company Treasure Films has announced that True Blood and Shameless (US) actress Emma Greenwell and Tom Hughes (Cemetery Junction, The Lady Vanishes) will star in Wild.

It tells the story of Mary Reynolds, "a visionary young garden designer who puts everything on the line in order to compete in the Chelsea Flower Show".

Wild will shoot in Ireland and Ethiopia in the coming months and is financed by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ the Irish Film Board, RTÉ and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).

International rights to the film have been sold to Radiant Films Inc.

Shannyn Sossamon (Mistresses, The End of Love, A Knight's Tale), singer Alanis Morissette and Vincent Perez (A Butterfly Kiss, The Crow: City of Angels) will star in The Price of Desire, Irish director Mary McGuckian's biopic of Irish furniture designer and architect Eileen Gray.

The film is co-produced by Pembridge Pictures with finance from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.

Other Irish films on the market in Cannes during the festival include Standby, Run & Jump, Life's a Breeze, The Stag, Frank and Love Eternal.
